You can make an appointment by telephoning the surgery (01434 381 214) during opening hours or by calling at reception. 10 minute appointments are allocated for morning and evening surgeries and longer appointment can be given in afternoon surgeries. We would ask that you arrive on time or that you inform the practice if you are unable to keep your appointment. Although the surgery is closed from 4.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 12.30 to 1.30 on Thursday lunchtimes there is a Doctor on call .If you are unable to wait until the practice reopens please call 01434 381214 for more information.

Out of Hours

When our GP practice is closed, patients should call the NHS 111 service by dialling 111. All calls are free from landlines and mobile phones.


Dial 999 for emergencies such as loss of consciousness, chest pain, serious accidents or loss of blood.

Repeat Prescription

Repeat prescriptions may be obtained by contacting the surgery during opening hours. 48 hours notice must be given either by telephone or in person. Prescriptions can be ordered online by EMIS Acess, please contact the surgery for more information.

Home Visits

If you are unable to attend the surgery due to illness and need a home visit please contact the surgery between 9:00am and 10:30am.

Telephone Consultations

Should you wish to speak to a GP and feel that a telephone consultation would be appropriate please contact reception during surgery hours. The GP will return your call within a designated time.

Registering with the Practice

When you register with the practice you will be asked to register with the GP of your choice and also to make an appointment for a registration medical with the Practice Nurse or GP.

Services Provided

The Practice provides child health surveillance, childhood immunisation  minor surgery, contraceptive services and cervical smears. Cryotherapy and travel vaccinations are also available.

Patients living more than one mile from Alston may choose to obtain their medication from the practice. How to Comment, Compliment or Complain

The Practice welcomes constructive comments and complaints, as they may help us to improve our service. Hospital Transport

Hospital transport can only be provided on medical grounds. However, if you need transport there is a leaflet available from reception providing full information on the service, the telephone number to ring is 0800 0323240 or 01228 403064.

Zero Tolerance

The practice does not tolerate aggressive verbal or violent behaviour within the Practice premises. This will lead to removal from the Practice list.


There is a ramp at the entrance to the surgery providing wheelchair access. The surgery also has a audio induction loop (T Loop). Please ask at reception if you require this.
